SUFIS AND GODS: TEMPLES AND SHRINES OF SOUTHEAST ASIA

This course introduces students to the religious worlds of the South Asian diaspora in Malaysia and Singapore, centered upon Hindu, Muslim and Sikh temples and shrines. The course aims to deepen students’ understanding of historical and contemporary South Asian religious worlds in port cities such as Singapore, Melaka and Penang through introducing them to the academic literature on South Asian Sufis, gods, temples and shrines in these cities, and through in person visits to shrines and temples in Malaysia and Singapore.
This is a 1 C.U. course that runs in Spring 2018 with a spring break travel component (March 2nd-11th). During this time students will experience the temples and shrines of Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Singapore, in person, and receive a deeper understanding of the impact Indian diaspora has had on the region.

This course will examine the growth of information technology opportunities within India and its impact on society. There will be several opportunities to network with Penn alumni based in India working in a variety of tech sectors, local and global corporations, and educational and public sector institutions. Cumulatively, these opportunities will be optimized to build a deeper understanding of the growth patterns, opportunity-cost, and contributions of the IT industry in India to itself, the U.S. and other global regions.
This is a 1C.U. course running in Spring 2018 with a Spring Trip travel component that will allow students to explore tech and innovation in Bangalore and Pune, India (March 2nd -11th). While in Pune, Penn students will be paired with local engineering students for a day-long hackathon, hosted by Thought Works and sponsored by IBM, TATA, and NASSCOM.
