University of Pennsylvania

University of Pennsylvania has at various times has at various times offered Pashto classes at all levels. For the academic year 2006-2007, the class was taught by Mr. Sanad Shah and for 2007-2008 by Mr. Manzoor Ahmed Khattak under the auspices of the Penn Language Center (http://www.plc.sas.upenn.edu). Prior to 2006-2007, classes during the academic year were taught for seven years by Dr. Benedicte Grima Santry using materials prepared by the Center for Applied Linguistics. A summer reading course in Pashto classical and folk literature was taught by Dr. Wilma Heston; some texts and tapes of materials from this class are on this website.

 

Indiana University

Introductory Pashto will be offered at Indiana University in Summer, 2007, as part of a Workshop including nine other languages. Information on the summer workshop is available at:  http://www.indiana.edu/~iuslavic/swseel/index.shtml

The class will again be taught by Dr. Rahmon Inomkhojaev. Rahmon is the author, with the significant help of Khwaga Kakar (now back in Afghanistan) of a textbook, Pashto: an Elementary Textbook, which has a related CD. A Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant from Kabul is also at Indiana during 2006-7, and web-based intermediate reading and listening modules are being produced.

SOAS

For the 2003-4 academic year, the University of London’s School of Oriental and
African Studies (http://www.soas.ac.uk ) was not staffed to offer Pashto as part of a degree program. Its Language Centre can provide classes or

Defense Language Institute

Pashto Basic Course at Defense Language Institute (DLI)

DLI provides a 47-week basic course in Pashto of about 30 contact hours/week. The maximum class size is 10 people. It is intended for military and related government personnel.
