Research Interests

 

Classical Indian music, sitar performance, social history of music and dance. Her research, publications and teaching interests include the history of performance, music in history and medieval and early modern textual studies. She works particularly with literature in Sanskrit, and Hindi and Urdu. Her book Sitar and Sarod in the 18th and 19th Centuries is the standard work on the history of the sitar. Her translation of the Sangitopanisatsaroddhara examines music in 14th-century Gujarat. Entries in the Garland Encyclopedia of Music, the MGG, and the recent Gloire des Princes of Musee de la Musique deal with the history of North Indian instruments. A current project is a translation of the 1910 Urdu-language Minqar-I Musiqar of Hazrat Inayat Khan. She is an active concert performer on the sitar in solo format and with the four-person Darbari ensemble.
