This course works with selected primary and secondary sources to explore music, musicians, and those associated with music in the temple, shrine, court and salon environments of Hindu and Muslim South Asia . The periods covered extend from the early centuries A.D. to the modern period. |

As we read and discuss the history of music and its contexts, we will listen to and discuss a variety of modern classical and semi-classical genres. Our aim is to achieve a level of familiarity with periods and styles and issues in the history of Indian music. |
