Performing Arts in South Asia Fall 2006 |
This course is a survey of selected traditions of theater, dance and music in India and the South Asian subcontinent. Topics include a selection of ritual and festival practices, classical dance, and devotional and classical music. The course introduces students to a variety of performance practices as it examines periods and aspects of social history in South Asia through the lens of performance. Readings and lectures are supplemented by audio and visual materials and live performances. |
No background in South Asia studies or performing arts is required. Students who do come with training or experience will be encouraged to contribute to class discussions and build and broaden their skills. |
