teaches Telugu, a South Indian language at University of Pennsylvania and at Columbia University. Her interactive Beginning as well as Intermediate Telugu language courses focus on development of the four essential language skills: listening, speaking, writing and reading. Dr. Magier’s Beginning Telugu courses place greater emphasis on developing and enhancing spoken skills, whereas her Intermediate Telugu courses aim at expanding writing and reading skills as well. She is an ACTFL certified trainer in Telugu language proficiency testing. She is a scholar of Indian history, with a Ph.D in Andhra history from Osmania University, Hyderabad, specializing in Indian economic history. She has taught various Indian history courses at both graduate and undergraduate level in India. Besides being a Telugu language instructor at Columbia and at Penn, Dr. Magier is also the Associate Editor (South Asia) of the online database, the BAS (Bibliography of Asian Studies), and the South Asia Consultant to NYU Libraries. (She also holds a Masters in Library Science from Queens College, NY). Her academic interests include South Indian history and culture; Indian economic and business history; oral history and diasporic studies.
