SAS - spacer001The South Asia Studies Major
Prospective majors should seek the advice of the Undergraduate Chair, Dr. Allyn Miner, no later than in the second semester of their sophomore year.
Requirements for the Class of 2009 and earlier

Minimum 12 c.u

1.
LANGUAGE - 4 c.u.
 
A South Asian language through the intermediate level with a grade of B or higher. Students may be exempted from this requirement by passing at an intermediate-mid level the language proficiency test administered by the department. Students who pass the proficiency test are required to fulfill the necessary credits with a distribution of other courses.
2.
FOUNDATIONAL COURSES - 2 c.u
 
SAST 001-006, Freshman Seminars, or 009 SAST Writing Seminar
3.
DEPARTMENTAL AREAS - 4 c.u.
 
Courses of a 200 level or above distributed among at least three of the disciplines and faculty represented by the South Asia Graduate Group.
4.
ELECTIVES - 2 c.u.
 
Courses chosen from offerings in South Asia Studies and other departments offering area-oriented courses. Consult the Undergraduate Chair.

Requirements for the Class of 2010 and later
Minimum 12 c.u.

Three courses within a single disciplinary area, including at least one 300-level course. With the permission of the major advisor, non-SAST courses above an introductory level may be accepted.

DEPARTMENTAL AREAS - 3 c.u.
 
Courses from SAST Departmental Areas other than that of the disciplinary focus. Two c.u.s of a second language may be accepted

Anthropology, Archeology, Art, Cinema, Communication, Economics, Development, Ethnic Studies, Health Sciences, History, International Relations, Literature, Music, Philology, Philosophy, Political Science, Religious Studies, Sociology, Womens Studies, Inter-Disciplinary - to be approved by major advisor.
5.
MEETING WITH FACULTY
 
During the senior year, the student will have a half-hour meeting with faculty and submit a one-page rationale for the major concentration.

OR
 4 c.u. in courses dealing with South Asia..

Honors
Students majoring in SAST may graduate with "Honors in South Asia Studies" if:

1.
They have a GPA of 3.5 or better in classes applied to the SASt major, and
 
SAST 001-006, Freshman Seminars, or 009 SAST Writing Seminar
2.
Earn in their senior year, among the 12 courses required of the major, a credit in "Directed Research" (SARS 300), by completing a senior thesis of honors quality..
 
Students who wish to graduate with Honors in South Asia Studies must signal their intention no later than during the pre-registration period in the term prior to enrolling in SARS 300. They should, at that time, provide to the Undergraduate Chair an up-to-date copy of their transcript and a 250-word research proposal endorsed by the faculty member who will supervise the completion of the senior thesis.

Language Certificate
In the Department of South Asia Studies, undergraduates may choose to pursue a Language Certificate in Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Sanskrit, Tamil, or Urdu. The Language Certificate is intended to encourage advanced language study in topics such as literature, culture, and media. Students who wish to obtain a Language Certificate in a South Asian language should apply to the SAST Undergraduate Chair. The minimum criteria for completion of the requirement for a Language Certificate are:

Completion of three CU's in advanced-level topics courses taught in the target language. Study abroad courses (AIIS advanced language courses) or advanced summer courses (SASLI) may be used toward the completion of these courses, subject to departmental approval.
Minimum of B+ average in the three courses.
Completion of the Certificate will be noted on the student's transcript. The Certificate will be awarded at the time of graduation.

Submatriculation
Students with exceptional qualifications may wish to undertake an intensified program leading to the master's degree, together with the bachelor's degree, at the end of their senior year. Such students must complete all the requirements of the SAST major, as stated above, and additionally all requirements of the master's degree (including the examination and research requirements, as described in the Graduate Admissions Catalogue). A maximum of 4 c.u. required for the master's degree, however, are counted also toward the requirements for the bachelor degree. Therefore, the requirements for submatriculation are:

16 c.u. of South Asia or South Asia-related courses. Four of these must be at the 400 level or higher; of these two should be distributed among disciplines represented by the Graduate Group and one additional focused on the chosen discipline of specialization.
2.
A South Asian language through the intermediate level with a grade of A- or higher (undergraduate credit only). Students may be exempted from this requirement by passing at an intermediate-high level the language proficiency test administered by the department. 1 c. u. in SARS 700 may be used to write the masters' research paper.
3.
Remaining course units will be chosen in consultation with an advisor from offerings in South Asia Studies and other departments offering area-oriented courses..
4.
The student will fulfill research requirements by preparing a thesis-style research paper to be presented to the full faculty.
 
Students who wish to submatriculate must apply in the junior year. They must meet the applicable requirements of admission to graduate school (including recommendations).They must at the time of their application submit a proposal for study, indicating their choice of a discipline and the course work they plan in order to acquire the necessary methodological training in that discipline as well as a broad competence in South Asian studies.
