Film Screening & Discussion: Marriage Cops

Tuesday, November 18, 2025 - 12:00pm

PWC Living Room, 3643 Locust Walk, Philadelphia, PA 19104

Join us for a screening of Marriage Cops, a documentary filmed with rare access inside the Women’s Helpline at the Dehradun Police Headquarters in North India. The film offers an intimate and nuanced look at how marital conflicts are negotiated within a state-run institution, raising timely questions about gender, marriage, bureaucracy, and state power in contemporary India. While its themes are often serious, Marriage Cops also captures moments of humor and humanity that emerge in everyday life. The University of Pennsylvania Library recently acquired the film.

Chai and snacks will be served.
Following the screening, there will be a discussion with filmmakers Cheryl Hess (in person) and Shashwati Talukdar (via Zoom), moderated by Dr. Ania Loomba, Professor Emerita, University of Pennsylvania.

Cosponsors: South Asia Center; Department of South Asia Studies; Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI); GSWS & FQT; Penn Women’s Center; Zilberman Family Center for Global Collections; Penn Cinema & Media Studies; and the South Asian Women’s Space.
