Languages

Penn offers one of the most broad and extensive programs for training in South Asian languages in the country. We offer introductory, intermediate, and advanced level courses in most of India's official languages (Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Marathi) as well as the languages of Pakistan (Urdu), Bangladesh (Bengali), and Afghanistan (Pashto).  In addition, our department continues to build upon our inherited past as one of the world’s leading centers for the academic study of Sanskrit.
