Holden Furber prize winner 2023

The Department of South Asia Studies is pleased to announce that Mathew Chemplayil is the recipient of this year's Holden Furber Prize. The prize has been awarded for his senior thesis, "A Conundrum of Compliance: Why States Lift Sanctions on Their Adversaries." The Department's Holden Furber Prize is awarded annually for the best undergraduate essay on a topic related to South Asia. Mathew's thesis analyzes case studies of American nuclear sanctions against India, Pakistan, and China to demonstrate the wide range of variations in the outcomes of nuclear noncompliance sanctions. Mathew is graduating from Penn this year with triple majors in International Relations, South Asia Studies, and History. Congratulations Mathew!
